November 2023 Update

Kia orana its been a while since i have posted an update for Te Pom, its been a busy year, and on a personal note i have had a few health problems which have kept me confined to my bed.

Last week Te POM deputy Chair of the board signed our new contract with Internal Affairs which will secure us a 3 year deal so we thank INTAFF for their support.

Last month i was able to visit Atiu with the support of Tuaine Manavaroa Jnr ( Bubs) | Snr Advisor Youth Development from Internal Affairs to introduce the kaupapa of Te POM and run some workshops. We are hoping to get to Mauke as well before Christmas. The Pa Enua have been very busy so getting onto the Islands to run workshops hasnt been easy. This has come about due to the funding we received from the NZ High Commission in December 2022. We hope to visit 5 islands in the Southern group this year or early next year.

Atiu airport and we were accompanied by my wife Rose standing outside our accommodation.

One of the things i have been working on is to set up a more robust referral system for men who are visited by the police. e have signed and MOU with Police and are currently waiting on Probation Services to sign theirs which hopefully will give us a better working relationship.

Currently most of our referrals come through Marae Ora. or lawyers.

I have also run a 6 week sexual abuse programme out at the prison for sexual offenders, this was a 2 hour session once a week, this was in conjunction with Marae Ora supported by Tansy Brown - Clinical Psychologist, we have also run a number of community workshops this year together offering training and professional development across a number of topics.
